Early Reading
We value reading as a crucial life skill. We teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme.
Reading at home
We value reading for pleasure and developing a love for reading.
All pupils have a reading folder, containing two books and a reading record. Children will bring home a reading practice book, which will be matched to their phonic ability. They will be able to read this fluently and independently. They will also bring home a sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you to both read and enjoy together.
Children are expected to read their book at least three times a week.
Reading Records
Reading records should be written in each time your child reads at home. This helps the Year 1 team see the progress that they are making at home. Please use the reading record to communicate any messages regarding reading only.

Homework:
Maths:
Each week a different maths task will be set on Sumdog for your child to complete.
Reading:
Reading books will be sent home weekly. There is the expectation that you read with your child every week and make a note of this in their reading record. Books will be changed on a Friday.
Spellings:
You will receive a copy of your child’s spelling assessment, which will be updated every term. Please practise the spelling and reading of these words. Click below to view spellings that we expect the Year 1 children to be able to read and spell by the end of the year.
Children will receive an Attitude and Achievement stamp for completing all homework on a fortnightly basis. This will be recorded in their Role Model and Citizenship record.
Physical Education:
Our P.E days are Tuesday and Thursday, please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school for this. It will be useful for your child to keep their PE kit in school all week to ensure they have it.
