Autumn Term- What are we learning?

This term our main focus is to provide opportunities for the children to come and have fun at school.

Our aim is to ensure the children settle into their new routines with developing confidence and to build positive relationships with both the adults that they will be working with and their peers.

Our Reception area is set up with a range of different play experiences through the autumn term, including a home corner, a shop, Percy’s hut and much more! We have lots of things to do both inside and out to develop a love of learning right from the start of the Reception year and our week is always busy with lots of exciting experiences, such as playing in the sand and on the bikes and trikes outside, yoga afternoons, dough and pen disco, dancing and crafting.

We develop confidence and resilience through our focus on books such as Giraffes Can’t Dance and Colour Monster. We also celebrate being unique through our Elmer topic. These book foci, along with other high quality texts support the children to develop a positive sense of self, to understand why being unique is important and to celebrate their qualities and achievements.

A range of mark making resources will be available for the children to explore.

These include including pencils, crayons, stencils, paint, pastels and scissors to explore creatively, drawing and making. The children will develop early drawing and writing skills, including how to use a range of tools and the best ways to join materials, make marks and create pieces of art that we can display in our classroom and save for our learning profiles. They will also be able to take part in large scale art, including chalking and painting on the playground and using big sheets of paper to draw along to music.

We spend much of our day outside and being active, giving the children lots of time to develop their gross motor skills. Activities such as bikes and trikes, using the adventure trail, building obstacle courses, playing with equipment such as bats and balls provide exciting experiences to practice all of these skills. We love to balance, jump, climb and explore!

The children will take part in a phonics lesson each day, where they will begin their journey to reading and writing by learning the Phase 2 phonemes. They will develop skills such as blending to read, formation of letters and segmenting to spell and will have lots of opportunities to practice this in each area of the classroom.

There are lots of maths exploration opportunities in the autumn term, where the children take part in activities that develop their counting, recognition, ordering and corresponding skills. Maths is fun both inside and out and we aim to develop reasoning and problem solving skills through a hands on and provision based approach.
