Spring Term- What are we learning?

Spring in Year 2 is a time for ambitious exploration and growth! This term, we build on and develop newly acquired knowledge with greater independence, uncovering individual successes as we solve problems, dive deeper into topics, and embrace higher-order thinking skills.

Writing: Adventures Await

This term’s Literacy focus is all about Journeys, inspired by the beautifully illustrated book Journey by Aaron Becker. Through this captivating story, we will develop as  storytellers, creating our own exciting adventures. Using the book’s stunning images and our own imaginative ideas, we will craft tales that bring unique perspectives to life.

Reading: A World of Stories Awaits

We absolutely love to read, and this term, we’ll be diving into a variety of exciting and irresistible books together. Our shared reading journey will take us through captivating stories, with our main texts for the term being:

History: Soaring Through Time

This term, we are historians, as we will take to the skies and explore the fascinating history of flight. Starting with the ground breaking first flight by the Wright brothers, we will learn how aviation has evolved over time. To bring this learning to life, we’ll visit Newark Air Museum and closely observe real planes and see first hand how technology and design have transformed flight throughout history. It’s a high-flying journey through time!

Science: Materials in Action

This term, we will work like expert scientists and dive into the world of everyday materials. We will investigate how different materials are used and evaluate their suitability for various purposes. Using our knowledge, we will take on an exciting hands-on challenge: designing and creating our very own kite! To finish the project, we will have the opportunity to test our creations by flying them, combining science, creativity, and fun.

Design and Technology: Creative Designers in Action

This term, we will step into the role of designers with two exciting projects in Design Technology.

Exploring Mechanisms: In the first half of the term, we will investigate how mechanisms, like wheels and axles, work together to lift loads. We will apply this knowledge to create their own moving fairy tale picture, combining imagination with engineering skills to bring stories to life!

Fruit Salad Creations: During the second half of the term, we will dive into the world of food design. We will explore the flavours, colours, and shapes of various fruits to design and make our very own fruit salads. Along the way, we will learn essential cutting and slicing techniques to prepare visually appealing and delicious creations.

This term promises to be a fun and creative journey full of hands-on learning!

Art: Weaving a Journey Through Creativity

This term, we will embark on an artistic journey as we explore the use of different materials to create a weaving-inspired masterpiece. We will learn through renowned artists, examining how colour and texture choices are influenced by inspiration and intention. We will make informed decisions about our own designs, weaving together creativity to produce truly unique works of art.
